  • The book was highly captivating. I did not get bored during this book, which is something I’m not always able to say. Even when things were more tranquil (conversations as they traveled, etc), I was engaged in the story and where it was going.

Valko is a great villain. A lot of stories try to have a cast of villains or a series of gray characters that border on villains. Making him a changeling opened up so many opportunities for suspense and had me constantly wondering, “Is this person actually Valko?” I also thought his dialogue was great. It was menacing, but it was also playful at times. I think this playful aspect had the effect of making his dialogue feel particularly sinister.

  • It was very enjoyable and only became more enjoyable as I went on. The characters are compelling to say the least. I went through a wild ride of emotions when it came to Jadica.

Jadica and Valko are my favorites by far. Especially at the end.I really have to hand it to the author, the way he pulled it all together at the end was masterful. All of the small details that tied into the climax were wonderfully executed. He kept me guessing the entire time, but it never felt all over the place.

It really was like several mysteries wrapped up in an epic fantasy. As the remaining pages dwindled and the situation grew more and more dire, I realized the kind of ending he was going for, and it landed. Really, really well done.  The only questions I really have burning in my mind are about what’s going to happen next.

  • I absolutely adored this book. The writing was amazing, I thought the plot flowed fabulously, and I’m really happy with the way it wrapped up. I have read so many books where the final chapters have absolutely just demolished the story, and I’ve been so upset, but I really liked how this finished.

If a book makes me audibly gasp, that means it’s good. I had three moments where I was just absolutely gobsmacked in this one.
